Present Italian sundials activities are mainly treated by UAI-Unione Astrofili Italiani (Italian Amateur Astronomers' Union). UAI is divided in 10 different sections.

UAI Sundials Section is named "Sezione Quadranti Solari"and the section address is c/o his Chairman:

The main UAI sundials section activities are:

  • The keeping of a national computerized catalogue of Italian old and new sundials.

  • The organisation of a general national meeting every one year and half about. The meetings made till now have been 19.

  • The patronage together with Unione Astrofili Bresciani (Brescia Amateur Astronomers' Union) of the international competition for sundials amateur and professional makers "SHADOWS OF TIME". 
    This competition takes place every 2 years in Brescia, in the North of  Italy, by Unione Astrofili Bresciani c/o Centro Studi e Ricerche Serafino Zani, via Bosca 24, C.P. 104, 25066 Lumezzane (Brescia) Italy. The sundials makers have to send some color photos of the sundials realized.

  • The coordination of the different Italian sundials activities made by single people or by groups operating in astronomical local associations.


LOCAL SUNDIALS ACTIVITIES

Single people or groups work on sundials in the different Italian's regions as follow:

  • individualisation, recording, help to restoration of existing sundials

  • theorical and practical studies about new and old sundials

  • sundials education and cultural diffusion


ITALIAN MAGAZINES ON SUNDIALS

The main periodic on sundials is:

entirely online, with quarterly publication. The first issue was published in April , 2013.

This magazine replaces the publication of the previous periodic:

Gnomonica Italiana

The other publications in which articles on sundials appear are:

  • "ASTRONOMIA UAI", the official UAI magazine, editor UAI, 6 copies /a year, about 48 pag.

  • "ASTRONOMIA NOVA", multimedia magazine www.eanweb.com

  • "LE STELLE", editor Gruppo B, 11 copies/a year, about 80 pag.

  • "NUOVO ORIONE", editor Sirio, 11 copies/a year, about 100 pag.

  • "LA VOCE DI HORA", publication of the Italian Association of Ancient Watchmaking - www.hora.it

  • "COELUM", editor Edizioni Scientifiche Coelum, about 100 pag.

  • "OROLOGI", editor Tecnimedia, 12 copies/a year, about 200 pag. www.orologi.it website has a list of all articles published, including the section on sundials

Sundials articles published in Italy every year are estimated to be about 30-60 and the books 2-3. These books concern usually provincial or regional registers sometimes with introductions about sundials theory and experience.


MAILING LIST

GnomonicaItaliana, managed by the Coordinamento Gnomonico Italiano ( CGI ) is the first Italian mail-list dedicated to the circulation of the sundial and the free exchange of views , experiences and knowledge of all fans of gnomonics.
